DNA match help to find Nan's Father - Was Nan a GI Baby?

findmybiofamilyuk

I started this search on behalf of my nan, Carole, who was born in 1944 and raised by her mother but grew up not knowing the identity of her father as her mother would never discuss it.

She also had a sister, Florence, born in 1942 who had been raised by her maternal grandmother and she too had not known the identity of her father.

Both sisters grew up believing they were half siblings.

There were rumours of my nan being a GI baby and possibly another baby boy who had been given up for adoption. I grew up knowing all this and wishing I could help my nan find the answer to the identity of her father. I had tried on a couple of occasions to investigate this without any success.

I had watched the GI Baby Programme on TV where they had used the Ancestry DNA Test and this prompted me to continue the search. After submitting my nan's DNA I was stuck as to where to go from here and looked to see if I could find someone who could help with the search.

Finding out Nan and her sister had the same father!!

I made contact with Yvonne who was more than happy to help me with this. Yvonne was firstly able to confirm that my nan and her Sister, Florence, were in fact full siblings which was something we were not expecting at all.

Who was Nan's Father then??

Within a few days, Yvonne was able to pin down a family name with the possibility of the potential identity of their father within the family.

It took a lot of analysing and investigation from Yvonne to find a family tree and make contact with the author ........ who confirmed she was the daughter, Gloria, of one of the brothers within the family tree. His name was Frank and we were able to find out his background and where he was based in the 1940's which confirmed he lived in the same area as my Great-Grandmother when my nan and her sister were born.

Waiting for Gloria's DNA Test Results

We asked Gloria if she was happy to do a DNA test to prove if they were related which she was more than happy to do. After a long 8 week wait the result confirmed that Gloria was my nan's and Florence's half sister and Frank was their father.

Nan Finally Knows Who Her Dad is?

My nan at the age of 78 now knows the identity of her father and the knowledge of a full brother and half brother (who sadly are now longer with us) and is now in regular contact with Gloria, her half sister.

With all of Yvonne's hard work, research and knowledge she has been able to fill in the missing piece of my nan's life giving her closure and a full family tree for all of our family and future generations. We cannot thank Yvonne enough.
