My late mum never knew who her birth parents were and I never realised I’d be able to find my biological grandmother.
A year ago my daughter said I wonder what our ethnicity is as we don’t know where Nan was born.
So it began. I signed up for a subscription with Ancestry and ordered my DNA kit.

I had no idea how to get Mum's side going as I knew absolutely nothing. My mum was handed over to her adopted parents at a railway station in England in the 1930s.
My DNA came in and I was surprised at the Scottish/ Irish percentage as to my knowledge I had no link to that.
I read about grouping my matches which I did but not well and soon was left with a group that didn’t belong to my paternal side . I knew this must be mum's side but didn’t have a clue what to do next. I got in touch with Yvonne and I told her everything that I knew. She was so warm and friendly straight away and I felt like I’d knew her forever.

By an absolute miracle Yvonne worked tirelessly with my matches and before I knew it, she told me to order a birth certificate in the name of someone I didn’t recognise other than the Christian name which was Mum's. I was so excited when I received it as it was Mum's original birth certificate !!! Yvonne had worked my tree up and sideways and established where all my close matches fitted in on mum's side. I found out my mum's story in terms of her mother’s situation through Yvonne’s work with the electoral roll and census’s.
Yvonne has continued her amazing work and now I know mum's paternal line also.

Yvonne is a treasure and has given me a heritage which I never knew I had and conversations with cousins which I am so happy to have.
